Accra: Chairman Wontumi's decision to pursue plea negotiations regarding the Exim Bank matter is part of a lawful strategy aimed at resolving outstanding legal and commercial issues. This was confirmed in a statement released by his campaign team.
According to Ghana Web, the statement, signed by Media and Communications Director Ewuradjoa Coleman, emphasized that the financial facility in question was secured to support a large-scale agricultural enterprise. This initiative is aimed at increasing food production, creating jobs, and contributing to Ghana's agricultural development.
The statement characterized the venture as a genuine investment and highlighted Chairman Wontumi's accomplishments in agriculture. In 2018, his farming enterprise received national recognition when he was named Ashanti Regional Best Farmer, First Runner-Up, at the 34th National Farmers' Day celebrations. His 10,000-acre maize farm in the Sekyere Central District was noted by agricultural authorities as making a significant impact on national food production.
The statement further explained that challenges such as adverse weather conditions, market fluctuations, and production constraints affected the venture's ability to meet its financial obligations on time. The campaign team stated that Wontumi's decision to enter plea negotiations demonstrated a commitment to resolving the issue through legal means rather than engaging in prolonged litigation.
The statement clarified that plea negotiations are recognized under Ghanaian law and should not be seen as an admission of guilt. It mentioned that the law provides avenues for parties to negotiate settlements, which may include arrangements leading to the withdrawal of charges where appropriate.
The campaign argued that seeking a negotiated settlement reflects responsibility and respect for due process. They emphasized that Wontumi remains committed to fulfilling his obligations and contributing to national development.
