Western Ghana Health Authorities Launch Urgent Polio Vaccination Drive

Takoradi: Public Health officials in Western Ghana have initiated an urgent polio vaccination campaign targeting children under five, following the detection of a polio outbreak in the Eastern Region. Dr. Gifty Amugi, the Director of Public Health at the Western Regional Health Service, emphasized the critical importance of routine immunizations and maintaining clean environments to combat the spread. According to Ghana News Agency, who also serves as the Deputy Regional Director of the Ghana Health Service, the resurgence of polio in parts of the Eastern Region necessitates an immediate response to prevent further spread. She informed journalists about the planned immunization exercise scheduled from October 17 to 21, aiming to vaccinate approximately 14 million children. The initiative underscores the gravity of the situation and the government's commitment to public health safety. Dr. Amugi highlighted the vulnerability of children under five to various viral and bacterial infections.
