Takoradi: Public Health officials in Western Ghana have initiated an urgent polio vaccination campaign targeting children under five, following the detection of a polio outbreak in the Eastern Region. Dr. Gifty Amugi, the Director of Public Health at the Western Regional Health Service, emphasized the critical importance of routine immunizations and maintaining clean environments to combat the spread. According to Ghana News Agency, who also serves as the Deputy Regional Director of the Ghana Health Service, the resurgence of polio in parts of the Eastern Region necessitates an immediate response to prevent further spread. She informed journalists about the planned immunization exercise scheduled from October 17 to 21, aiming to vaccinate approximately 14 million children. The initiative underscores the gravity of the situation and the government's commitment to public health safety. Dr. Amugi highlighted the vulnerability of children under five to various viral and bacterial infections. She stressed that v accinations, coupled with clean living conditions, play pivotal roles in safeguarding children from the potentially severe consequences of such diseases. 'We are reaching the last child…vaccines save life and as a service we are bent on securing the lives of these future leaders,' Dr. Amugi stated, underscoring the life-saving potential of vaccines. Additionally, Dr. Amugi called on communities to maintain higher standards of cleanliness, which significantly contributes to preventing disease outbreaks.
