AfDB Supports Ghanaian Postgraduate Research on Infectious Diseases

Accra:Twenty Ghanaian postgraduate researchers are working on developing new diagnostic tools, treatments, and vaccines for infectious diseases such as tuberculosis, HIV, and drug-resistant bacterial infections. This initiative is part of the Post COVID-19 Skills Development and Productivity Enhancement Project (PSDPEP), funded by the African Development Bank (AfDB) and implemented by the Social Investment Fund (SIF) in conjunction with the Government of Ghana.

According to Ghana News Agency, the research is intended to bolster Ghana's readiness for future pandemics by enhancing scientific research and creating skilled personnel. Mr. Abass Adams-Nurudeen, CEO of SIF and Project Coordinator, emphasized the necessity of sustained investment in scientific research, highlighted by the COVID-19 pandemic, to prepare for unforeseen public health crises.

Professor Kwamena Sagoe, the Project Lead, explained that the 20 scholars, equally divided between men and women, are conducting translational research aimed at providing practical solutions to health issues. One project involves developing a rapid test to measure Tenofovir levels in HIV patients, while others focus on creating a potential tuberculosis vaccine and studying synthetic peptides to enhance natural product efficacy against pathogens.

The research also includes studies on vaccines for diseases like tuberculosis and rabies and aims to produce tools and templates that could aid future scientific progress. The program not only seeks to tackle infectious diseases but also aims to develop a cadre of skilled professionals contributing to Ghana's health and education sectors, with some researchers affiliated with local universities and the Food and Drugs Authority.

One researcher, Mr. Alhassan Sa-eed, is investigating the potential of compounds from Cannabis sativa to boost antibiotics' effectiveness against multidrug-resistant bacteria. The AfDB-supported scholarship has provided financial support, allowing these scholars to focus on their research, which remains ongoing, with findings requiring further validation before clinical application. The PSDPEP is part of a larger effort to enhance skills development and productivity in Ghana post-COVID-19.
