Accra: The Wa Municipal branch of the Ghana National Association of Private Schools (GNAPS) has launched a super-common-mock examination for Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) candidates from private schools in the Municipality, as part of preparations for the 2026 BECE.
According to Ghana News Agency, the initiative, which also marked the beginning of the 2026 GNAPS Week celebration, aims to address declining performance trends observed among some private schools in the area. Mr Mumuni Sulemana, the Wa Municipal Chairperson of GNAPS, noted that the examination was developed after extensive consultations with key stakeholders in the private education sector.
The super mock examination was conducted at the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) examination hall using external invigilators, examiners, and independent markers to assess the candidates' scripts. This setup was designed to replicate actual BECE conditions, allowing students to become familiar with exam procedures and instill discipline.
Mr Sulemana further elaborated that the mock exam would help candidates identify their strengths and weaknesses, providing an opportunity for improvement before the final examination. He urged other districts and regions to consider similar initiatives to enhance educational performance, emphasizing the importance of maintaining educational standards for national development.
Mr Alhassan Malik Daubile, the Wa Municipal Secretary of GNAPS, explained that the super mock examination is part of a broader strategy to enhance academic competitiveness and excellence among private basic schools. He mentioned that other districts had shown interest in the initiative, with plans to expand beyond the Municipality.
Mr Saaka K. Adamu, the Examination Officer at the Wa Municipal Education Directorate, acknowledged that while the Municipality had generally performed well in BECE, the recent performance of private schools had declined. He stressed the importance of GNAPS's actions in restoring academic excellence among its member schools.
Mr Adamu also highlighted that while academic knowledge is crucial, success in exams also requires familiarity with rules and regulations. By exposing candidates to BECE standards, the initiative aims to reduce anxiety and improve psychological readiness for the final examination.
The super common mock examination is scheduled to conclude on Friday, February 20, 2026, with results to be analyzed for guiding remedial interventions ahead of the upcoming BECE.
