Adaklu-helekpe: Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, accompanied by the Member of Parliament for Adaklu, Kwame Governs Agbodza, and the District Chief Executive, Jerry Yao Ameko, visited the community of Adaklu-Helekpe to offer support to families affected by a mudslide from the Adaklu Mountain.
According to Ghana Web, the mudslide hit the community following intense rains on May 20, 2026, engulfing at least five houses and nine vehicles, and causing displacement among residents. Gunu expressed concern over the situation, stating that the wellbeing of affected residents is a priority for authorities.
In a social media post shared on May 21, 2026, Gunu referred to the incident as a 'deeply distressing situation,' emphasizing the importance of supporting those impacted. The delegation also visited victims injured in the incident who are currently receiving treatment at Ho Teaching Hospital (Trafalgar). During the visit, Gunu announced a donation of GHS20,000 to assist with medical expenses and support other patients in the ward.
The minister also revealed that he has engaged with the regional leadership of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) to conduct a thorough assessment of the area affected by the disaster. This action aims to evaluate the safety of continued habitation and guide future interventions.
Gunu reiterated the government's commitment to providing support and ensuring the long-term safety of the affected residents, promising ongoing efforts to aid in their recovery and wellbeing.
