Accra:First paragraph of the news story.
According to Ghana Web, multimedia sports journalist Muftawu Nabila, who first reported on the 2026 World Cup visa scandal, has stated that the number of victims involved in the case has grown considerably. The initial count of 90 victims has now more than doubled to over 180, based on information from sources close to the investigation.
The increase in reported victims is attributed to the ongoing investigations by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service. Initially, some figures were underreported, but as the probe continues, more cases are being uncovered.
The scandal has intensified scrutiny on the alleged visa facilitation arrangements involving the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) and the National Sports Authority (NSA). Concerns were raised by the Minority in Parliament regarding allegations that applicants were charged between US$7,000 and US$14,000 for visa assistance.
In response to the allegations, President John Dramani Mahama has instructed Yaw Ampofo Ankrah to temporarily step down from his role as Director-General of the NSA while the police investigation is underway.
