ACCRA: In a significant development within Ghana’s political and business realms, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, a Member of Parliament for North Tongu, has brought to light a substantial visa processing scandal allegedly involving the country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration. The scandal is said to involve a hefty US$38.2 million, with allegations pointing towards a contract signed under the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia administration.

According to Ghana Web, Ablakwa claims that the scandal stems from a hasty and questionable visa processing contract signed with Access Citizens Services Ghana Limited during the final weeks of the current administration’s tenure. This revelation has sparked considerable controversy, drawing criticism and concerns from diplomats and security officials alike.

In another development, Dr. Joyce Aryee, a Trustee of Ghana’s National Cathedral, has criticized calls to halt salary payments to workers involved in the project, despite ongoing delays. Speaking to journalists, Dr
. Aryee described such suggestions as “ridiculous,” emphasizing that the workers are still engaged in efforts to maintain the project, which has been stalled due to financial constraints.

Meanwhile, in the energy sector, Sunon Asogli Power (Ghana) Limited, an independent power producer, has indefinitely shut down its 560MW plant. The shutdown is attributed to delayed payments by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), which has hindered the company’s ability to sustain operations. In a press statement dated October 16, 2024, the company expressed its need for timely payments to continue functioning.
