Very Rev Amenyedu was a transformational Church Leader – GEC

Accra,- The Global Evangelical Church (GEC) has described the late Very Reverend Edward Kodzo Amenyedu, the first Moderator of the Church, as a transformational Leader.

The Very Rev Edem Tettey, the Immediate Past Moderator of the Church, said he provided solutions to challenges faced by individuals, families, congregations, and movements.

“Indeed, he is a strong leader whose character is the bedrock of his authentic leadership style,” he said.

The Very Rev Tettey said this when he delivered the Very Rev Amenyedu Leadership Excellence Award inaugural Lecture in Accra.

The lecture was on the topic: “Contemporary Leadership Challenges Confronting the Church of Christ in Ghana.”

The Very Rev Amenyedu was nominated to the Acting Moderator position of the E.P Church of Ghana, now the GEC in 1991.

The decision was based on the provisions of Article 29 of the 1979 Constitution of the Church.

He was formally invited to take up the vacant position as the Acting Moderator and was later confirmed at the 52nd Synod in 1993 as the Substantive Moderator during a “tumultuous period.”

The Immediate Past Moderator said the Very Rev Amenyedu was indeed a great spiritual leader, who personified servant leadership in the Church he led.

“His leadership was inspiring and it affected those who came close to him positively,” he added.

The Very Rev Tettey said the first Moderator was an “embodiment of humility, an incarnation of bravery and enthusiasm,” adding, passion was the drive of his leadership activities.

He said the Very Rev Amenyedu was a servant leader who valued diversity of opinions, cultivated trust and built the esprit de corps.

The Immediate Past Moderator said one of the critical contemporary leadership challenges of the Church of Christ in Ghana currently was the politicisation of the Church and its voice by some denominational leaders, which was not the case during the late Moderator’s time.

He, therefore, asked leaders to speak to issues relating to unrighteous acts and injustice affecting all, especially the poor and lowly in society, adding, they must speak truth to power and declare the mind of God as in the Bible

“The Church of Christ in Ghana is losing her taste,” and we must rise to the task, he added.
