According to Ghana Web, in a post shared on its X page on July 29, 2026, the embassy said the requirement applies to all US citizens, including children, who also hold another nationality. The embassy emphasized that "US citizens are REQUIRED to enter and depart the United States on a US passport."
The embassy further cautioned dual nationals against using their foreign passports to apply for an Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA). It noted that the US Department of Homeland Security routinely denies or cancels such applications. This advisory is particularly crucial for US citizens living abroad who intend to travel to the United States. The embassy advised them to ensure they have a valid US passport before making travel arrangements.
Additionally, the embassy reminded travelers that passports should generally be valid for at least six months after the date of entry into a foreign country. It urged those with expired or soon-to-expire US passports to renew them before their trip to avoid any travel disruptions.
