Accra: A Ghanaian clergyman, Apostle George Newman, has sparked debate on social media after a video of him making controversial remarks about single mothers went viral. In the video making rounds on X, Apostle Newman, during a radio interview, was asked to share his thoughts on young men marrying single mothers. In response, he questioned the wisdom of any man who chooses to enter a relationship with a single mother.
According to Ghana Web, Apostle Newman stated, “Unless you’re cursed, I don’t see why you’d go for a single mother.” He further elaborated, “If you are a man and you run into a single mother, watch yourself. They will lie to you and tell you that ‘if you love me, love my child’ but where is the father of the child?” His comments have ignited discussions online, with many questioning the implications of his statement on societal perceptions of single mothers.
While Apostle Newman briefly acknowledged that some single mothers may have found themselves in difficult circumstances through no fault of their own, he warned that some are single due to their own behaviors. “Sure, there are some good women who might have gotten involved with the wrong man or the father may be dead. But there are women who intentionally put the man through a lot while the men are simply trying to make ends meet for them,” he commented.
He concluded with a personal stance on the matter, stating, “That is why they are single in the first place. So, if it were up to me, I will not marry a single mother.” His remarks have drawn mixed reactions, with some supporting his views and others criticizing them as insensitive and unfair.
