Accra, July 15, GNA-The University of Ghana Chapter of the Ghana Institution of Geoscientists (GhiG) has been inaugurated at the Legon campus, with a call on students of Geoscience to join the institution for networking and to derive other associated benefits.
A six- member executive committee of the chapter, headed by Mr. Michael Aziriba Mba, a final year student of earth sciences, was also sworn into office by Mr. Chrisler Ankrah, the General Secretary of the GhiG.
Other members of the committee are Mr. Obed Tettey, Vice President; Ms. Saudatu Samed, General Secretary; Ms. Evelyn Ohene-Gyan, Organising Secretary; Kenneth Ansah Delali, Website Officer; and Mr. Douglas Ayeh Okyere, Public Affairs Officer.
The inauguration was part of the efforts by national leadership of the GhiG to increase its visibility among the nation’s student population.
Mr. Ankrah, in an inaugural statement, assured the chapter of the support of the GhiG, with the goal of bringing out well-trained geoscientists to exert a positive impact on the management, exploration and care of the environment.
He said: “We’ve already designed a lot of programmes to support the chapter. The ultimate goals are to bring out well-trained Geoscientists for them to impact positively in the management, exploration, and care of our environment…to stop to the many disasters, rivers being devastated, ground and surface waters being polluted and all negativities.
Professor Patrick Asamoah Sekyi, the Head of Department and Vice President of GhiG, who chaired the inauguration, urged the students and the chapter to network with the industry players.
He urged the students to play active roles in the activities of the chapter and use their membership to register and integrate the Legon chapter in programmes and projects of the institution.
Professor Daniel Asiedu, immediate past President of GhiG and former Provost, College of Basic and Applied Sciences (CBAS), urged the students to expand their networking and build professional relationships with academics and industry players in a bid to successfully navigate through the job market after school.
Mr Michael Aziriba Mba, President of the chapter, promised to ensure and enhance the objectives of the institution in the areas of developing and maintaining standards of professional ethics, acquainting the student body with the latest concepts and developments in the geosciences, promoting the exchange of ideas and information in geosciences among members, disseminating and facilitating the discussion of geoscience concepts and stimulate interest in the geoscience study and profession and encourage the public to appreciate the importance of the profession in everyday life.
He said the chapter, through his “leadership shall enhance tutorial sessions and incorporate in the activities of the semester a Geographic Information training to equip the students on digitization and tutorial sessions on courses read at the Department of Earth Sciences.
The GhiG serves as an umbrella that groups all practicing and learning geoscience members.
The institution focuses on regulating Geoscience practices to promote the welfare of its members without prejudice and protecting the public interest, natural resources, and our environment.
