UK Ministers Endorse UEFA Boycott Over FIFA’s Commercial Plans

Accra: UK ministers have endorsed UEFA's decision to boycott FIFA competitions until the organization abandons its controversial plans to establish a company with private investors to manage the World Cup and other events. UK Culture Secretary, Lisa Nandy, expressed strong support for this move, stating, 'Football belongs to the fans, not billionaire investors. Enough is enough. It's time to take a stand to protect our game.' According to Ghana News Agency, the boycott announcement followed a crisis meeting of UEFA members on Thursday afternoon, prompted by FIFA's plans revealed on Tuesday. These plans entail creating a new company, FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE), to manage competitions, including the men's and women's world cups. Minority stakes in FFE would be sold to private investors, with Thrive Eternal, founded by Joshua Kushner, anticipated to be the lead investor. UEFA declared that no national teams under its jurisdiction would participate in FIFA competitions "for so long as these proposals remain alive." The organization emphasized that participation would resume only if the proposal was "abandoned in its entirety" and FIFA provided "binding assurances" against future private ownership of its governance or competitions. FIFA argued that the plans would significantly boost development funding for national associations worldwide, potentially up to $10 billion, between 2027 and 2030. However, the proposal has faced substantial criticism from football and political figures. UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham criticized the plans, asserting that football "does not belong to investors" and that the World Cup was "never anyone's to sell." Liberal Democrat sport spokeswoman Anna Sabine supported the boycott and urged UEFA to form a "new global footballing body" prioritizing accountability and fan interests. Reform UK leader Nigel Farage praised UEFA's stance and called for the resignation of FIFA boss Gianni Infantino. Associations were requested to decide by September 19 on supporting private investment, with documents indicating FIFA anticipated receiving all investment funds by the end of October. A Football Association spokeswoman affirmed solidarity with European colleagues, opposing FIFA's plans by stating, 'The Fifa World Cup belongs to football and always will.' The Football Association of Wales and the Scottish FA also reiterated their support for UEFA's statement, highlighting their unity with fellow national associations.
