UESD Welcomes 421 New Students at Sixth Matriculation Ceremony

Somanya: The University of Environment and Sustainable Development (UESD) in Somanya has officially inducted 421 new students during its sixth matriculation ceremony, strengthening its commitment to training professionals capable of tackling Ghana's environmental and sustainability challenges. According to Ghana News Agency, the event took place in the Auditorium of the Multipurpose Building and was attended by Council members, university management, staff, families, and friends, underscoring the institution's specialized focus on environment, sustainability, and development. Among the newly admitted students, 352 are undergraduates, consisting of 166 males and 186 females, while 69 are enrolled in MSc and MPhil programs, comprised of 60 males and nine females. The Registrar, Mrs. Mary Abena Agyepong, administered the Matriculation Oath and the UESD Honour Code. Speaking on behalf of Vice-Chancellor Prof. Eric Nyarko-Sampson, Pro Vice-Chancellor Prof. Edward Wiafe Debrah, emphasized the significance of matr iculation, describing it as a pivotal moment in the academic journey of the new students. He highlighted that the university received 711 applications for the academic year, admitting 555 applicants, with 352 officially enrolling. Prof. Debrah encouraged students to prioritize learning beyond examinations, focusing on building competence, creativity, and character. He pointed out UESD's unique positioning through its three pillars-Environment, Sustainability, and Development-to support national efforts in combating climate change, biodiversity loss, and promoting sustainable agriculture and community development. Council Chairman, Mr. Emmanuel Seth Terkper, a former Minister of Finance, congratulated the students on their admission and reminded them of the responsibilities that come with joining the university. He quoted Nelson Mandela, stating, "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world." Mr. Terkper reiterated the essential role of UESD, established under Act 898 (2015), in addressing Ghana's pressing environmental and sustainability concerns. Representing the graduate students, Mr. Agbemavor Vinyo Raymond vowed their dedication to rigorous research and responsible leadership. Brain Sackey and Etornam Aloryor represented the undergraduate students. The ceremony concluded with the formal declaration of the students' admission, marking the start of a new chapter for the sixth cohort at UESD.
