Cairo: The University for Development Studies (UDS) has set a new benchmark in African university football by clinching back-to-back continental titles. The Tamale-based institution secured a 2-1 victory over Universit© Julius Nyerere de Kankan (UJNK) of Guinea, marking a historic triumph at the 12th All Africa University Games.
According to Ghana Web, UDS successfully defended their title in a closely contested final held in Cairo, Egypt, on September 16, 2026. This win establishes UDS as the first African university team to achieve consecutive victories at the continental level. Entering the tournament as reigning champions from the 2024 edition in Lagos, Nigeria, UDS showcased their dominance once again.
The Ghanaian team demonstrated formidable skill throughout the tournament, particularly evident in their semi-final match against Egypt's Delta University, which they won decisively with a 4-0 scoreline. A standout player, Mohammed Ezideen, made significant contributions, including a hat-trick in a commanding 4-1 victory over the University of Hertfordshire.
This latest success continues UDS' impressive record in university football. In 2025, they became the first African team to win the FISU World University Football Championship, overcoming Brazil's Paulista University 2-1 in extra time in Dalian, China. This period of achievement underscores UDS' growing reputation in global university sports.
