Awutu-senya: Twenty teaching and non-teaching staff of public and private schools in the Awutu-Senya District have been honoured for their dedication and hard work towards the growth of education in the area. Each of the awardees received a 32-inch television set as their prize during a ceremony dubbed 'Teachers Prize Day,' organised by the Awutu-Senya District Directorate of the Ghana Education Service (GES). The event was held under the theme: 'Elevating the Status of Teachers for Quality Education.'
According to Ghana News Agency, the awards were initiated by Madam Gizella Tetteh-Agbotui, the Member of Parliament for Awutu-Senya West Constituency, in partnership with Mr Kalala Eghan, the District Chief Executive. The initiative aims to recognise outstanding teachers in both public and private schools, assessing them based on classroom performance, innovation, and community impact. Initially, the application for the award was open to staff with a minimum of five years of teaching experience, later reduced to three years, resulting in 20 awardees from various educational levels within the district.
Madam Tetteh-Agbotui, who is also the Deputy Minister for Works, Housing and Natural Resources, expressed gratitude to the district's teachers for their educational support. She mentioned her long-standing desire to institute the teachers' awards, celebrating them for their efforts and resilience in advancing education in the district. She urged teachers to engage in periodic self-assessment to maintain academic productivity and assured continued support in providing essential teaching and learning resources.
Mr Eghan, the District Chief Executive, highlighted the importance of elevating teachers' status for quality education. He remarked on the decline in Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) performance and stressed the need for teacher motivation and periodic training. The MP and the Assembly have since organized training sessions and initiated the Teachers' Prize Day to enhance BECE performance.
