Accra: Dr Charles Amoah-Wilson, the Director of Human Resource at the National Communications Authority, has advocated for a shift in the curriculum of tertiary institutions from theory-based learning to a more practical and experiential approach. He emphasized the need for students to engage in real-life experiences rather than solely relying on textbooks and pamphlets, which often lack relevance to their immediate environment.
According to Ghana News Agency, Dr Amoah-Wilson highlighted the importance of experiential learning through project management methodologies, suggesting that assigning students to projects would help them address real-life problems effectively. This approach, he argued, would better prepare students for the challenges they would face after completing their education, as they would already be familiar with practical solutions.
Dr Amoah-Wilson shared these insights during the inaugural ceremony of NiBS University's Executive Doctorate in Residence (EDR) initiative, held at the university's campus in Accra. The EDR initiative is designed to connect professional business leaders with master's students, serving as mentors for their educational and career development. The event was themed "Bridging Academia and Practice: Building Business Leadership Excellence."
He further stressed the importance of integrating mentorship and internships into Ghana's tertiary education system to enhance students' understanding and performance in their chosen fields. This, he noted, would help enrich their curriculum with practical experiences, ultimately building their capacity for the corporate world.
Dr Senanu Klutse, a Senior Lecturer and Coordinator of the EDR programme at NiBS University, explained that successful corporate leaders, who are also doctorate alumni of the university, would participate as visiting lecturers and mentors. Their involvement aims to introduce a practical perspective to the master's programs, providing students with guidance on navigating career challenges and offering solutions.
The Executive Doctorate in Residence programme has been established to facilitate this integration of practice and academia, offering master's students the opportunity to learn from experienced professionals.
