Accra: As Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko turn to foreign coaches ahead of the new Ghana Premier League season, an extraordinary trend in the competition's recent history deserves attention: the last 10 league titles have all been won by Ghanaian coaches.
According to Ghana Web, from Mas-Ud Didi Dramani's triumph with Asante Kotoko in 2013/14 to Ibrahim Tanko's latest success with Medeama in 2025/26, local coaches have consistently found a way to take Ghana's biggest domestic prize. The 10 titles have come in different ways. Some coaches restored former champions to the top, while others delivered historic first league titles to clubs such as Legon Cities, Samartex, and Gold Stars.
While foreign coaches have had their moments in the GPL during this period, none has managed to break the decade-long run of Ghanaian title winners. Here are the coaches behind that remarkable run:
Mas-Ud Didi Dramani began the decade of local dominance by guiding Asante Kotoko to the 2013/14 title. Bashir Hayford continued the trend with AshantiGold in 2014/15, ending a long wait for another league crown. Enos Adipah led Legon Cities to their first-ever title in 2015/16, which earned him the Coach of the Season accolade.
Yusif Abubakar kept the trophy in local hands by leading Aduana Stars to the 2016/17 title. Samuel Boadu's dramatic success with Hearts of Oak in 2020/21 ended a 12-year championship drought for the club. Prosper Narteh Ogum brought the title back to Asante Kotoko in 2021/22, while Evans Adotey guided Medeama to the 2022/23 championship.
Nurudeen Amadu delivered a remarkable title for FC Samartex 1996 in 2023/24. Frimpong Manso led Bibiani Gold Stars to their first title in 2024/25, and Ibrahim Tanko completed the decade-long sequence with Medeama's 2025/26 championship.
Foreign coaches have certainly had opportunities during this period, bringing experience from Europe, Asia, and elsewhere, achieving respectable league finishes or domestic success with their clubs. However, none has managed to claim the GPL title during this decade.
Now, with Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko once again choosing foreign coaches, the 10-coach, 10-trophy run faces a direct challenge. The new season will show whether Ghanaian coaches can extend the streak to 11, or if a foreign coach will finally break it.
