Tema Region ECG Allocates Over GHS13 Million for Transformer Replacements

Tema: The Tema Region of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), encompassing sections of the Eastern Region, has invested a total of GHS13,079,669 to replace transformers from the last quarter of 2025 through the first quarter of 2026.

According to Ghana Web, the General Manager for the region, Ing Emmanuel Ankomah, revealed these figures during a session with journalists at the ECG Nungua District Office on April 14, 2026. Ing Ankomah highlighted that GHS9,379,765 was spent on replacing 32 transformers in the final quarter of 2025, while GHS3,699,903 went towards replacing 22 transformers in the initial quarter of 2026.

Ing Ankomah attributed the necessity for these replacements to several factors, with vandalism being a primary concern. He explained that damaged installations frequently necessitate complete replacement. Additionally, he expressed worries about unauthorized interference by community members, noting that individuals switching phases on their own can lead to overloads and subsequent damage to transformers. Such actions, he emphasized, are prosecutable.

Vehicular accidents involving electrical installations were also identified as a cause of damage. Ing Ankomah called on the public and community leaders to aid in safeguarding ECG infrastructure, underscoring its critical role in ensuring a stable power supply. He also commended those residents who promptly report faults and outages, acknowledging their contribution to maintaining service reliability.
