Accra: The Tema Regional Police Command has successfully intercepted and recovered 2,213 parcels of suspected Indian Hemp from an abandoned canoe. The operation was conducted by the Marine Police Detachment at Ada during a routine patrol on the River Volta at Tuanikopey Island.
According to Ghana News Agency, the interception occurred on Thursday, September 17, at approximately 0045 hours. The police officers discovered an outboard-powered wooden canoe containing twenty-nine sacks of dried leaf substances, which they believe to be Indian Hemp. Upon noticing the police, the occupants abandoned the canoe and fled the scene.
The police search revealed the 2,213 slabs of dried leaves wrapped in yellow cellophane tape. Alongside the suspected narcotics, the police also found fourteen 25-litre gallons, twelve of which contained premixed fuel, and two Yamaha outboard motors with 40HP and 30HP capacities.
The intercepted substances have been transported to the Ada District Police Headquarters, and arrangements are in progress to move the outboard motors and premixed fuel for further investigation. The Tema Regional Police Command is actively working to identify and apprehend the individuals responsible for abandoning the canoe and its contents.
The police have issued a warning to the public against involvement in the trafficking and transportation of narcotic substances. They have also urged anyone with information regarding the owners or occupants of the canoe to report to the nearest police station to aid in the ongoing investigations.
