Accra: The Oti Regional Peace Council has conducted sensitization sessions for Assembly Members in the Jasikan Municipality and Kadjebi District, focusing on peacebuilding, conflict prevention, and the importance of vigilance in maintaining community peace and stability.
According to Ghana News Agency, the sessions, which took place on September 17 and 18, 2026, are part of the Council's efforts to enhance community-level mechanisms for conflict prevention, early warning, and peaceful dispute resolution. The regions, located along the Eastern Corridor and near Ghana's eastern border with Togo, require effective community engagement and timely information sharing to sustain peace.
Reverend David Darkon Awuda, a member of the Oti Regional Peace Council, emphasized the importance of vigilance and responsiveness among Assembly Members to emerging issues that could cause tension. He urged them to collaborate with traditional authorities, religious leaders, and other stakeholders to address potential conflicts early.
Rev Awuda highlighted the need for dialogue and mediation at the community level, focusing on issues such as land disputes, chieftaincy, family matters, and youth-related tensions. He noted that Assembly Members, given their close interaction with constituents, are well-positioned to identify early signs of conflict and promote resolution through dialogue and lawful means.
Mr. Paul Akonor, Regional Secretary of the Oti Regional Peace Council, facilitated the sessions, discussing potential threats to peace, especially those related to the proximity to Togo. He stressed the importance of vigilance, information sharing, and coordinated community responses to potential threats.
During the Kadjebi engagement, District Chief Executive Dr. Sam Issaka Suraj encouraged Assembly Members to act as peace ambassadors in their areas. He noted their crucial role in resolving disputes and preventing conflicts from escalating. Dr. Suraj expressed commitment to supporting initiatives that prevent conflicts and promote peace.
In Jasikan, Municipal Chief Executive Mr. Parke-Davis Magyigbe urged Assembly Members to collaborate effectively and exercise caution when addressing community issues. He reassured them of the Assembly's commitment to fostering collaboration among local authorities to promote peace and stability.
These engagements are part of a broader initiative to deepen local participation in conflict prevention and strengthen community-based peacebuilding in the Oti Region.
