TDC Ladies and Partners Organize Breast Cancer Screening for TDC Ghana Limited Staff

TEMA: The TDC Ladies, in collaboration with the Tema Industrial Lions Club and Raphal Medical Center, conducted a breast cancer awareness and screening event for employees of TDC Ghana Limited as part of the Pink October breast cancer awareness month. The initiative also included physiotherapy and massage services for the staff. According to Ghana News Agency, Dr. Felix Ofori, a medical practitioner at the Raphal Medical Center, addressed the staff on the prevalence of breast cancer, emphasizing that while it predominantly affects females, males can also be affected. Citing a World Health Organization report, Dr. Ofori noted that in 2022, approximately 2.3 million people globally suffered from breast cancer, with around 670,000 deaths. He highlighted that 0.5 to 1 percent of men are also affected by the disease. Dr. Ofori explained that while the cause of breast cancer remains unknown, certain risk factors such as family history, genetic predispositions, alcohol consumption, smoking, and a sedentary lifesty le increase the likelihood of developing the disease. He outlined symptoms to watch for, including unexplained breast pain, ulcers, redness, discharge, and lumps. Preventive measures suggested by Dr. Ofori include preventive surgery for high-risk individuals, abstaining from alcohol and smoking, regular exercise, and dietary changes. He stressed the importance of regular breast screenings for early detection and treatment, which can improve survival rates. Treatments may involve the removal of the breast or lymph tissues to prevent further spread. Madam Kate Annan Quayeson, president of TDC Ladies, stated that the organization conducts annual health awareness and screening activities to educate women on self-care, focusing on issues like cancer and diabetes. This year's focus on breast cancer aligns with Pink October. She expressed gratitude for the support from TDC management, which helped ensure the program's success. Mr. Solomon Antwi, president of the Tema Industrial Lions Club, remarked that the club frequently collaborates with similar organizations to improve public health awareness and mobilize resources for health-related initiatives.
