Accra: People with tattoos remain eligible to donate blood after a six-month waiting period, a blood donor recruiter has clarified. Ms Rita Justine Menorkpor emphasized this policy while addressing common misconceptions about blood donation during a recent event in Accra.
According to Ghana News Agency, Ms Menorkpor explained that the six-month waiting period is crucial for ensuring the safety of blood donations. This time frame allows blood screening equipment to detect any infections or diseases that may have been transmitted through tattooing instruments. Tattooing involves the use of needles and other tools that come into contact with blood, making proper sterilization and hygiene practices vital to prevent the transmission of bloodborne infections.
Ms Menorkpor highlighted that some infections might not be immediately detectable after exposure, thus the waiting period serves as an additional safety measure before individuals with tattoos can donate blood. She reassured that having a tattoo does not automatically disqualify anyone from donating blood and encouraged tattooed individuals to continue considering blood donation as a way to contribute to saving lives.
Furthermore, Ms Menorkpor advised individuals interested in getting tattoos to choose licensed facilities that adhere to approved health and safety standards. Such facilities are more likely to use sterile equipment, thereby reducing the risk of infection. She urged eligible donors to come forward after the necessary waiting period, emphasizing the life-saving potential of each safe blood donation.
