Takoradi: Engineering students from Takoradi Technical University (TTU), who are beneficiaries of the Karpowership Ghana Scholarship Scheme, marked this year's International Day of Education as they toured the company's Powership to gain firsthand experience in power generation operations.
According to Ghana News Agency, the International Day of Education, observed annually on January 24, was held under the theme: 'The Power of Youth in Co-Creating Education,' highlighting the role of young people as active partners in shaping responsive and inclusive learning systems. In keeping with the spirit of the celebration, the tour placed the TTU students at the centre of the engagement.
The visit provided them with practical insight into power generation, bridging the gap between theory learned in classrooms and real-world industrial operations. Students were taken through various technical components of the Powership, including engineering systems and operational processes. Technical staff guided the sessions and held interactive discussions to address students' questions on energy production, safety protocols, and environmental considerations.
A Level 300 Electrical Engineering student, Faustina Fianudzu, described the experience as transformational, noting that it strengthened her understanding of engineering concepts and renewed her motivation. 'This tour has helped me appreciate how the concepts we learn in class are applied in real-world engineering practice,' she said, adding that her interaction with onboard engineers, particularly a female chemist, had boosted her confidence in pursuing an engineering career. She expressed gratitude to Karpowership Ghana for the scholarship support that continues to sustain her academic journey.
The Coordinator of Women in Engineering (WinE) at TTU, Hawa Assanpong, commended the company for facilitating meaningful collaboration between academia and industry. 'This visit has given the students practical insight into how power generation works while exposing them to safety and environmental standards. Experiences like this deepen understanding beyond the classroom,' she said.
Karpowership Ghana's Communications Manager, Ms. Sandra Amarquaye, said the initiative reflects the company's conviction that education becomes more impactful when students are actively involved in shaping their learning pathways. 'The International Day of Education reminds us that young people are not just beneficiaries of education but partners in co-creating it. By opening our operations to these students, we are enabling them to link classroom knowledge with real industry practice,' she said.
Ms. Amarquaye added that the company's educational interventions extend beyond scholarships to include mentorship, exposure, and hands-on learning opportunities aimed at empowering young people with relevant skills. Karpowership Ghana's commemoration of the Day forms part of its wider Corporate Social Responsibility commitments, which prioritise inclusive and equitable education as a driver of sustainable development. Through scholarships, mentorship, and experiential learning engagements, the company continues to support youth development in line with the theme for this year's celebration.
