Bawdie: Residents of Bawdie in the Western Region apprehended a suspected thief and forced him to parade through the local market while holding a microphone and speaker to publicly promise he would never steal again.
According to Ghana Web, the incident was captured in a video on X and viewed on Sunday, August 16, 2026. It showed local community members leading the young man, allegedly caught stealing, through the market. Instead of immediately handing him over to local authorities, the crowd decided to administer a public reprimand to humiliate and deter future offenses.
The suspect was seen shirtless and escorted by an energetic group of community members, marching down the busy market streets with a public address system. Holding a wireless microphone connected to a speaker, he could be heard repeatedly confessing his deeds and promising to desist from stealing in their local dialect.
While such informal public punishments draw significant attention on social media, local law enforcement typically advises residents against taking the law into their own hands. Authorities urge the public to report criminal suspects directly to the police to ensure proper legal procedures are followed.
