Accra: Ghanaian dancehall artiste Stonebwoy has recounted how he discovered he had been nominated for the BET Awards. In an interview with Kafui Dey, monitored by GhanaWeb, Stonebwoy revealed that he had no prior knowledge of his nomination.
According to Ghana Web, Stonebwoy was on a music video shoot in Nigeria when he received an email informing him about the nomination. He expressed his surprise by stating, '.I remember I was in Nigeria shooting a music video, and when the nominations came out, my name was there. For those who don't know, I had no idea how I even ended up at the BETs.' He clarified that neither he nor his management submitted his music for consideration.
Stonebwoy further noted that the award had a positive impact on his career, although he believes he did not fully maximize the benefits that came with winning it in 2015. He reflected on the situation, saying, 'I think my life would have been better anyway because winning a BET at that time, as a reggae dancehall or afrodancehall artiste, is what Burna Boy represents today.' He also recalled that a media attack at the time detracted from the prominence they could have gained from the award.
Stonebwoy was adjudged the winner of the 2015 Best International Act: Africa award, beating notable artistes such as Sarkodie, AKA, Fally Ipupa, Sauti Sol, The Soil, Wizkid, and Yemi Alade.
