Siena:Ghana's involvement in major international sporting events has frequently led to scrutiny beyond the on-field performances, with various sports ministers criticized over financial management and accountability.
According to Ghana Web, Ghana's 2010 World Cup participation sparked controversy over the management of funds. Akua Sena Dansua was the Youth and Sports Minister at the time, but Clement Kofi Humado, her successor, faced parliamentary scrutiny in 2012 over financial discrepancies. Initial reports indicated US$8.06 million was allocated, with US$7.19 million spent during the group stage. A later report accounted for a total of US$19 million, covering broader expenses. Humado clarified that the initial figures were interim.
Another significant controversy occurred during the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. Youth and Sports Minister Elvis Afriyie Ankrah was criticized after the government flew more than US$3 million in cash to Brazil to pay players' appearance fees, following their threat to boycott training. This incident was investigated by the Justice Dzamefe Commission of Inquiry. Shortly after Ghana's early exit from the tournament, President John Mahama reassigned Afriyie Ankrah and moved his deputy, Joseph Yamin, to another position.
Former Youth and Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif faced questions regarding the organization of the 2024 African Games in Ghana. An Auditor-General's report highlighted financial irregularities totaling approximately GHS580 million, including issues with sports equipment and accommodation. In June 2026, plans were announced to surcharge Ussif and other officials over these irregularities.
The most recent controversy involves current Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams concerning visa arrangements for the 2026 World Cup in North America. Allegations have been raised about visa-facilitation processes and fees, with a call for Adams and Ghana Tourism Authority CEO Maame Efua Houadjeto to step down pending investigations. President John Dramani Mahama asked NSA Director-General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah to step aside for the police investigation. Adams has denied any wrongdoing, stating the ministry merely forwarded a request through proper channels without selecting or guaranteeing applicants’ visas.
