Speaker Bagbin Urges MPs to Combat Absenteeism and Lateness

Accra: Speaker Alban Bagbin has adjourned Parliament sine die from its First Meeting of the Second Session with a strong message to Members of Parliament (MPs) to address the issues of absenteeism and lateness. Speaker Bagbin emphasized the need for MPs to metaphorically "bury absenteeism and lateness with Christ" in hopes of fostering a renewed commitment to serving the nation. According to Ghana News Agency, Speaker Bagbin expressed concern over the persistent issues of lateness and absenteeism within the parliamentary ranks. He urged MPs to use the Easter break as a time for reflection and spiritual renewal, hoping they would return with a strengthened resolve to diligently fulfill their legislative duties. Despite his concerns, Speaker Bagbin also took the opportunity to commend the MPs for their dedication to parliamentary democracy. He acknowledged their hard work, stating that their "sacrificial sweat continues to irrigate the gardens of parliamentary democracy." Furthermore, he encouraged MPs to eng age with their constituents during the break to gather insights that could inform future legislative activities. The Session was marked by the passage of significant legislation, including the Legal Education Bill, and the approval of financial disbursement formulas set for 2026. However, certain important Bills, such as the Parliamentary Transition Bill, remain pending and will require further deliberation in future sessions. Speaker Bagbin extended his gratitude to the Clerk to Parliament, Parliamentary Service Staff, and media representatives for their continued support, highlighting their essential role in bringing Parliament closer to the people. The legislative body had reconvened on February 3, 2026, for the First Meeting of the Second Session of the Fourth Republic, embarking on critical legislative work for the nation.
