Accra:Renowned Ghanaian businessman Sir Sam Jonah has called on young Africans to shift their focus from seeking government employment to starting their own businesses, which can generate jobs for themselves and others.
According to Ghana Web, Sir Sam Jonah emphasized that Africa would continue to face challenges related to poverty and unemployment if the youth primarily relied on government jobs instead of exploring entrepreneurial opportunities. He made these remarks during the Methodist University Ghana International Conference.
Sir Sam Jonah stressed the importance of viewing entrepreneurship as a respectable career choice rather than a fallback option for those unable to obtain formal employment. He expressed concerns about the ongoing struggles of many educated young Africans who find it difficult to secure jobs after completing their university education, often resulting in prolonged unemployment.
Furthermore, Sir Sam Jonah urged African governments to foster an environment conducive to young graduates working, investing, and building successful businesses in their home countries. He highlighted the significant resources spent on educating young people who then lack opportunities to utilize their skills, leading some to seek opportunities abroad.
He warned that the continuous exodus of skilled young Africans in search of better prospects could hinder the continent's long-term development. Sir Sam Jonah concluded by noting that Africa's future relies on creating conditions that enable talented young people to prosper domestically rather than feeling the need to leave.
