Accra: The Minister of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, has issued a stern warning to citizens regarding the registration of SIM cards under the identity of others. He highlighted the risks associated with such actions, especially when those SIM cards are used for fraudulent activities.
According to Ghana Web, the minister stated that if a SIM card registered under an individual's Ghana Card is associated with mobile money fraud, the card will be flagged and may be blocked. He urged individuals not to register SIM cards for others, emphasizing that everyone possesses a Ghana Card and should independently register their SIM cards.
During a media briefing on March 17, 2026, Sam George stressed that the use of a Ghana Card to register multiple SIM cards involved in fraudulent activities could result in the card being blocked. This would prevent the cardholder from registering new SIMs, a measure aimed at sanitizing the system and safeguarding vulnerable individuals.
The minister also announced that the forthcoming registration process will include a liveliness test to verify identities and reduce fraudulent activities. Individuals who obtained SIM cards through deceitful methods may face difficulties during registration, as the system is designed to detect suspicious behavior.
Sam George urged law-abiding citizens to comply with the registration process, while warning those involved in mobile money fraud that their SIM cards will be blocked. He reiterated the government's commitment to prioritizing the security and integrity of the telecommunications system.
