Shama: The Shama District Assembly has taken a significant step in boosting local agriculture by distributing approximately 9,000 broiler chicks to poultry farmers in the district. This initiative is part of the Government's poultry birds development project aimed at enhancing the local poultry sector.
According to Ghana News Agency, District Chief Executive Mr. Paul Otis Dentu highlighted the importance of this initiative during a community durbar at Asemasa Number Two, which was attended by beneficiary farmers, agricultural extension officers, traditional leaders, and assembly officials. He emphasized that these chicks represent an investment in both the families of the farmers and the local economy. Mr. Dentu encouraged farmers to adopt good husbandry practices, protect the birds from diseases, and ensure they are raised into healthy, market-ready poultry.
The initiative is designed to boost domestic poultry production, improve food security, create jobs, and increase the incomes of farming households, while reducing Ghana's reliance on imported poultry products. The District Chief Executive urged farmers to focus on proper management, maintain strict hygiene, ensure regular feeding, and implement effective disease prevention measures to minimize mortality and achieve marketable bird weights.
Mr. Dentu assured the farmers that the District Directorate of Agriculture would provide necessary technical assistance, vaccination support, and regular monitoring to help improve productivity and reduce losses. He noted that the initiative would strengthen local poultry production by making quality chicks accessible to smallholder farmers and enabling them to expand their operations.
Beneficiary farmers expressed optimism about the intervention, believing it will help them increase production, improve household incomes, and create opportunities for young people interested in commercial poultry farming.
