Asokore: Pastor Colonel (Rtd) Peter Nyarko Duodu, the President of the South East Ghana Union Mission (SEGUM) of the Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) Church, has commissioned two new dormitory blocks for the SDA College of Education at Asokore in the Eastern Region. The new facilities aim to address the institution's infrastructure deficits and provide improved accommodation for students.
According to Ghana News Agency, the dormitory blocks, named Rose Owusu - Kakra and Charles Kuma - Korante Halls, are expected to alleviate congestion within the boarding system and enhance hygiene standards. These state-of-the-art facilities include modern washrooms designed to offer convenience and better living conditions for the students.
The commissioning event was attended by notable figures including members of academia, SEGUM Executives, the governing council of the school, church leaders, students, and both teaching and non-teaching staff. In his address, Pastor Col. (Rtd) Duodu praised the principal's effective management of internally generated funds for maintaining the facilities. He highlighted the importance of students taking personal responsibility to preserve these assets and emphasized that a portion of the SEGUM budget would be allocated to support education and the college.
Pastor Duodu underscored education as the cornerstone of national development and called for collective resource mobilization and unity. He articulated a vision to elevate the college's status to a national pride, fostering an environment conducive to driving Ghana's progress through education.
Professor Vincent Adzahlie-Mensah, the Principal of the College, elaborated on the strategic plan to expand infrastructure, particularly residential halls, to enhance student living conditions. He noted the honor bestowed upon historical figures Mr. Charles Kuma Korante and Madam Rose Owusu Kakra through the naming of the halls, recognizing their leadership and contributions.
The Principal also emphasized the college's commitment to academic excellence, moral discipline, and proactive facility maintenance through regular monitoring and student engagement. He outlined future growth plans, including government-funded projects like a new male hall and auditorium, alongside internally funded projects targeted for completion by 2027, ensuring long-term development and prudent resource use.
The SDA College of Education, originally named the Koforidua Day-Teacher Training College, began as a boarding institution on October 26, 1962, with 120 students. Situated on 135.9 hectares of land, the college has offered numerous programs since its inception, evolving from its initial establishment as the Seventh-day Adventist Training College at Asokore near Koforidua in the Eastern Region of Ghana.
