Accra: A security guard at the Accra New Town Experimental D/A School, identified as Alhaji, has indicated that a potential tragedy was averted when a building at the school collapsed. He explained that if the incident had occurred on Monday, March 30, 2026, during regular school hours, many teachers could have lost their lives.
According to Ghana Web, Alhaji noted that pupils were present on campus for special classes on Saturday, March 28, 2026, and used the collapsed building. He elaborated that the uncompleted structure served as a common area for teachers and housed the headmaster's office on the first floor. Alhaji emphasized that pupils writing examinations were occupying the ground floor at the time.
He remarked, "Just three days ago, some pupils were here for Saturday classes and closed around 3:30 pm. If the collapse had happened today, many teachers could have died, as most of them have their desks in the storey building. The headmaster's office is even on the first floor, while pupils were on the ground floor writing exams."
In the aftermath of the collapse, Vice President Prof Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang visited the site to assess the situation and offer the government's support to the affected residents. The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has confirmed that the incident resulted in the death of three individuals, while 20 victims have been successfully rescued.
