Accra: Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has clarified misconceptions surrounding the arrest of Asante Akyem North MP Ohene Kwame Frimpong in the Netherlands. Addressing Members of Parliament during the Second Meeting of the Second Session of Parliament on Thursday, May 21, 2026, Alban Bagbin stated that security agencies do not require his permission to arrest or invite MPs for questioning.
According to Ghana Web, the Speaker emphasized that the responsibility of the security agencies is to officially inform his office about such actions and provide details of the allegations or circumstances surrounding the matter. Bagbin further explained that his office is only expected to determine whether parliamentary privilege or immunity applies in cases involving the arrest or questioning of lawmakers.
'It is not for security agencies to seek my permission before arresting or inviting a Member of Parliament for questioning. It is not. Their duty is to inform me and provide the circumstances or allegations that have created the suspicion,' he said.
Alban Bagbin's remarks come in the wake of the arrest of Ohene Kwame Frimpong, popularly known as OK Frimpong, in the Netherlands by the FBI over alleged fraudulent activities.
