Sam George Asserts Homosexuality Requires Psychiatric Care

Accra: Sam George, co-sponsor of the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, has asserted that homosexual people need medical and psychiatric attention, linking his position to historical classifications of homosexuality in medical literature.

According to Ghana Web, Sam George made these statements while speaking to journalists at the 4th Inter-Parliamentary Conference on Family, Sovereignty and Values. He emphasized that homosexuality was previously classified as a mental disorder in the United States until it was removed from medical references following social campaigns. George argued that the decision to declassify homosexuality as a mental illness was based on social influence rather than scientific evidence.

In related discussions, Samuel Nartey George also urged Parliament to progress the bill to President John Dramani Mahama for further constitutional procedures. He contended that Parliament's Standing Orders do not allow for a reconsideration of the bill after it has been passed, contrary to suggestions made by the Speaker. Sam George noted that once a bill is passed, Parliament's responsibility is concluded, and the President must then scrutinize the bill according to constitutional guidelines.
