Agona swedru: The Royal Asona Family of Agona Swedru has officially informed the Swedruman Council of Chiefs, led by Nana Kweku Esieni V, Nifahene and Regent of the town, about the passing and the upcoming 40-day observation of Nana Dr. Bright Oduro Kwarteng.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Paul Arthur, spokesperson, stated that the Royal Asona family head, Ebusuapanyin Kweku Essuon, has scheduled Tuesday, April 14, 2026, for the 40-day celebration of the late chief. Ebusuapanyin Kweku Essuon informed the council that Nana Oduro Kwarteng was selected to succeed the late Swedruhene, Nana Kobena Botwe II, with plans underway for his installation under the stool name Okokodurfo Kojo Nyarko II.
Unfortunately, Nana fell ill in late 2024 and was flown to the United Kingdom for medical treatment. However, on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, the family received the news of his passing. This has plunged the entire Agona Swedru township into mourning.
Nana Oduro Kwarteng had previously served as the Chief Director of the Ministry of Local Government and the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture during President Mahama's first administration. He was also a senior lecturer at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) and the 2020 aspiring National Chairman of the Convention Peoples Party (CPP).
Ms. Faustina Egyiriba Boison, a niece of the late chief, mentioned that her uncle was supportive and provided words of encouragement to his family, and he will be fondly remembered by his family members.
