Accra: President John Dramani Mahama has highlighted the importance of stronger institutions, improved safety systems, and responsible leadership in the wake of a tragic helicopter crash. Speaking at a memorial service to mark the first anniversary of the tragedy on August 6, 2026, President Mahama emphasized that the loss should serve as a poignant reminder to leaders that every decision made in public office carries significant consequences for human lives.
According to Ghana Web, President Mahama expressed that the tragedy should motivate the country to bolster systems that safeguard those serving the nation, particularly personnel engaged in challenging and high-risk roles. He urged a moment of reflection for all leaders, emphasizing that every decision impacts lives and that public office is fundamentally a sacred trust.
President Mahama further articulated that leadership should not be gauged merely by the authority wielded by public officials but by the responsibility they bear towards the welfare and safety of citizens. He underscored that the memory of those who perished imposes an obligation on the nation to enhance safety standards, invest in personnel welfare, and ensure institutions are equipped to avert similar future tragedies.
"The greatest memorial we can build is not one made of stone or bronze," he stated, "it is one that is built through responsible leadership, improved systems, and a steadfast commitment to protecting those who dedicate their lives to Ghana." He asserted that the crash anniversary should serve as a catalyst for meaningful reforms, rather than merely being commemorated through ceremonies.
The crash on August 6, 2025, claimed the lives of several individuals, including Defence Minister Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, Environment, Science and Technology Minister Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, security officials, and Ghana Air Force personnel, all of whom were on an official assignment related to combating illegal mining.
