Tarkwa nsuaem: Mr. Alex Damtey, the Municipal Environmental Health Officer for Tarkwa Nsuaem, has urged residents to properly handle waste in their communities to prevent cholera, malaria, and typhoid outbreaks. He emphasized the importance of utilizing available waste collection services to maintain public health.
According to Ghana News Agency, despite the presence of numerous private collection tricycles and trucks in the municipality, many residents neglect to use them. Mr. Damtey highlighted that in the Cyanide community, designated areas for solid waste disposal exist, yet improper waste disposal practices persist, with residents dumping waste into drains, backyards, and unauthorized locations.
Mr. Damtey, addressing some challenges faced by his department, mentioned that while significant efforts have been made to raise awareness, the enforcement of by-laws would soon be prioritized. He warned that individuals who violate these regulations would face prosecution. Last year, several prosecutions took place, and similar actions are planned for this year to ensure community safety and act as a deterrent.
He urged communities to adhere to established waste management rules and encouraged households to build their own latrines to reduce the burden on public facilities. The focus remains on promoting the proper disposal of refuse to prevent clogged drains, underscoring the importance of community involvement in effective waste management.
