Accra: The Deputy Director of Operations of the United Party (UP), Afia Korankyewaa, has expressed support for the government’s decision to rename Kotoka International Airport to Accra International Airport. The announcement, made by the Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, has stirred public debate across the nation.
According to Ghana Web, Afia Korankyewaa shared her views during an interview on C TV, describing the decision as timely and symbolic. She emphasized that the renaming honors the Ga people, who are the indigenous inhabitants of Accra. Miss Korankyewaa questioned the significance of the name Kotoka, arguing for the importance of naming national assets after leaders who have left positive legacies, such as Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, J.J. Rawlings, and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. She expressed satisfaction with the government’s decision, led by President Mahama, to change the name.
Miss Korankyewaa also highlighted that the proposed new name eliminates political bias and fosters national unity. She noted that the name Accra International Airport is a tribute to the Ga people, encouraging them to appreciate President Mahama for the recognition.
The decision has elicited mixed reactions nationwide. Some see it as a move towards inclusiveness, while others feel that the existing name is a significant part of Ghana’s history.
