Redemption Congregation marks 100 years of service for children

Tema,- The Tema Community Nine Redemption Congregation of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana (PCG) on Sunday marked the centenary celebration of children service, as the children led the liturgy, recited Bible verses, poems, bible reading, and choreography among others.

Pioneer and long service teachers of the children department were honoured with citations, and an anniversary cake cut for the celebration.

The celebration was on the theme: “100 years of children’s service and beyond: Christ our example”.

Mr Vincent Teye Atter, a Children Service Teacher preaching the sermon challenged parents not to only strive to make money, but must also think about their children’s welfare.

Mr Atter reminded parents that it would not be worth it leaving home early to make money, and having their children go wayward because of lack of parental care, saying “if you don’t involve God in your struggles all will be useless.”

He said there was the need for parents to know the friends and parents of their children, and show them love and care to build trust among them.

He also reminded parents, teachers and care givers that their characters and examples they showed to children could drive them away from leading a godly life and growing into responsible children.

He encouraged parents not to leave their house helps out of their religious activities, stressing, “feed your house help with the word of God because they are always with your children and train them for you, sometimes they teach our children bad things in our absence including having sex with them.”

Madam Patience Gakpeto, a Service teacher giving a brief history of the children service said the PCG children service officially started at Ebenezer PCG at Osu in the Ga Presbytery on November 21, 1921.

Madam Gakpeto added that the department started its first service in the Redemption Congregation at Tema Community Nine on October 06, 1984 with 32 children adding that they currently had 250 children and 22 teachers.
