Adaklu: Madam Esther Buakuma, Adaklu District Police Commander, has issued a stern warning that individuals involved in rape could face imprisonment ranging from five to 25 years under Section 97 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29). She emphasized that engaging in sexual activities with girls under 16 years is classified as defilement under Section 101 of Act 29, carrying a potential sentence of seven to 25 years.
According to Ghana News Agency, the warning was delivered during a session organized by the Adaklu District Office of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) aimed at boys and men at the animal market in Adaklu Waya. The initiative sought to educate participants on adolescent health, gender equality, and the prevention of gender-based violence. This engagement was supported by Global Affairs Canada and implemented by the NCCE in partnership with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).
Madam Buakuma also highlighted that engaging in sexual activities with a close blood relative is an offense under Section 105 of Act 29, punishable by a prison term ranging from three to 25 years. She pointed out that offenders come from various professions, including judges, doctors, engineers, lawyers, teachers, clergy, and law enforcement officers.
The police commander identified potential perpetrators as teachers, family members, pastors, co-tenants, boyfriends, classmates, co-workers, and fathers. She outlined causes of domestic violence such as lack of self-confidence and assertiveness, low awareness of rights, and parental neglect. Additional factors included inadequate shelter, substance abuse, poverty, and exposure to violence.
Madam Buakuma also addressed psychological abuse, noting its detrimental impact on a victim's self-worth and emotional wellbeing. She urged men to treat their partners with dignity and respect.
