Amsterdam:Accra Questions are mounting over the Ghana government's response to the continued detention of Asante Akyem North Member of Parliament, Ohene Kwame Frimpong, in the Netherlands.
According to Ghana Web, former Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North, Kwadwo Baah Agyemang, has criticized the government's apparent silence over the matter, describing its handling of the situation as unfair to the detained MP. He argued that the government should intervene on behalf of the MP, highlighting the need for diplomatic support.
Agyemang's comments have reignited public discussion about the level of diplomatic intervention Ghana is providing to its legislators. Frimpong has been in Dutch custody since his arrest in May 2026, and there have been unsuccessful attempts to secure his bail.
The Majority Chief Whip and Member of Parliament for South Dayi, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, stated that two applications seeking bail for Frimpong have been turned down by a Dutch court. The initial substantive bail application was dismissed, and a subsequent appeal was also rejected, keeping the MP detained.
Parliament is preparing for extradition proceedings scheduled to commence on November 18, 2026. These proceedings will determine whether Frimpong will be transferred to the United States to face allegations linked to an extradition request from the U.S. His arrest was reportedly linked to allegations of romance fraud, money laundering, and other financial crimes, though Frimpong is presumed innocent unless proven otherwise.
The arrest took place at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam, and Parliament confirmed his detention shortly after, indicating that diplomatic engagements were underway to gather more information. Despite these efforts, questions persist about the adequacy of the government's response and the diplomatic support extended to Frimpong.
