Hohoe: The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has commissioned and handed over four mechanised boreholes to four communities in the Hohoe Municipality of the Volta Region. The initiative, in collaboration with the Hohoe Municipal Assembly, aims to address the lack of potable water in Wli Agorviefe, Fodome Dzogbega, Klokpoga, and Hohoe By-Fire communities.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Philip Agbezudor, Volta/Oti Regional Manager of PURC, emphasized that the project is part of the Commission's social corporate responsibility, as mandated by the Legislative Instrument establishing the PURC. The boreholes, equipped with polytanks, are intended to alleviate the challenges faced by communities without access to potable water.
Mr. Agbezudor highlighted that there are approximately 54 water projects underway in the Volta region, with many set to be commissioned and handed over by the end of the first quarter of the year. He urged the beneficiary communities to take ownership of the boreholes to ensure their longevity and fulfillment of their intended purpose.
He clarified that the PURC projects are not politically motivated but are funded through the Commission's revenue. Meanwhile, Mr. Prosper Kumi, Hohoe Municipal Chief Executive, acknowledged the projects' timely delivery and expressed optimism about their impact on the communities. He also mentioned plans to engage with the beneficiary committees to ensure proper maintenance of the boreholes, suggesting the formation of 3-member committees to oversee operations and generate revenue for expansion and repairs.
Representatives from the communities, including Togbe Zonyra III of Wli Agorviefe, Mr. Simon Ganyo of Fodome Dzogbega, and Mr. Kofi Gbemu of Klokpoga, expressed gratitude to the PURC and the Assembly. They committed to maintaining the boreholes to prevent them from becoming non-functional.
The boreholes were constructed by Sed Investment International.
