Accra:Public sector workers in Ghana are set to receive an increase in their total pay package by 9% in 2027, followed by a 10% rise in their base pay in 2028, as per a new agreement between the government and organised labour.
According to Ghana Web, Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson highlighted the significance of this agreement, noting that it acknowledges the crucial role of workers in Ghana’s economic recovery. The deal is historic as it marks the first instance of a public sector pay agreement between the government and organised labour that spans two years.
The agreement specifies that 1% of the 2027 pay increase will be dedicated to improving workers' conditions of service. Furthermore, there is a provision for both parties to reconvene and reassess the 2028 base pay increase if inflation in December 2027 hits a predetermined trigger level.
Dr. Forson commended public sector workers for their efforts in keeping essential services operational and aiding the country's economic recovery. He emphasized the importance of focusing on workers' welfare as the nation continues to consolidate its economic gains.
The government is committed to safeguarding workers' incomes while ensuring that public expenditure remains sustainable. As part of the agreement, there will also be a review of certain allowances to address existing disparities in the current pay system.
Dr. Forson mentioned that the agreement sets the stage for the proposed Independent Public Remuneration Commission, which will require legislative action for its establishment. He assured that organised labour will be involved in consultations on any reforms impacting them.
