Kumasi: The KNUST's Governing Council on May 13, 2026, appointed Professor Christian Agyare as the university's next Vice-Chancellor for a four-year term beginning from August 1, 2026 to July 31, 2030. He will succeed Professor Rita Akosua Dickson to become the 13th Vice-Chancellor in the university's history. His appointment was approved by the KNUST Governing Council at its 292nd Special Meeting held on May 13, 2026.
According to Ghana Web, Professor Agyare hails from Koneyaw in the Asante-Bekwai Municipality of the Ashanti Region. His educational journey began at the Armed Forces Basic Schools at 4BN Uaddara Barracks in Kumasi and continued at Prempeh College. He later enrolled at KNUST, where he earned both his Bachelor of Pharmacy (BPharm) and Master of Pharmacy (MPharm) degrees. His academic excellence earned him a scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service to pursue doctoral studies at University of Mnster, where he obtained a Doctor rerum naturalium (Dr. rer. nat.).
After completing his doctorate, Professor Agyare undertook postdoctoral fellowships at University of California, San Francisco and the Novartis Institute for Biomedical Research. These experiences broadened his scientific outlook and connected him to leading international research networks. Professor Agyare joined KNUST as a Lecturer in 2003 and steadily rose through the academic ranks, becoming a Senior Lecturer in 2011, Associate Professor in 2016, and Full Professor in 2020.
Over the years, he has served in several important leadership roles, including Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Head of the Quality Assurance and Planning Office, and Provost of the College of Health Sciences, KNUST's largest academic college. Professor Agyare is a Professor of Pharmaceutical Microbiology and Natural Products. His research focuses on antimicrobial agents from medicinal plants, wound healing and anti-inflammatory compounds, antibiotic resistance in humans and animals, and natural product drug discovery.
He has authored more than 200 publications, co-written 14 books and book chapters, and supervised numerous PhD, MPhil, and MSc students. His scholarly work has earned over 5,000 citations and a Google Scholar H-index of 36, placing him among Ghana's most influential scientists. One of his most notable achievements is attracting more than US$11 million in competitive research grants from organizations such as the German Research Foundation, German Academic Exchange Service, Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, World Intellectual Property Organization, and the World Bank.
These grants have strengthened scientific research and innovation at KNUST and across Ghana. Professor Agyare has received numerous honors, including Best Researcher at KNUST, Young African Researcher Award (2016), and Outstanding Contribution in Reviewing for the Journal of Ethnopharmacology. He has also been ranked among Ghana's top scientists in the AD Scientific Index.
Beyond his laboratory achievements, Professor Agyare is widely respected for his administrative leadership, strategic planning, and commitment to academic excellence. Colleagues describe him as a visionary scholar whose blend of scientific rigor and institutional experience positions him well to lead KNUST into its next phase of growth in research, innovation, and global competitiveness.
