President Mahama to Review Aayalolo Contra-Flow System After Initial Successes

Accra:President John Dramani Mahama has expressed satisfaction with the initial outcomes of the Aayalolo contra-flow system, introduced to alleviate traffic congestion in Accra. This was disclosed by Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs Minister Mahama Ayariga.

According to Ghana Web, the pilot programme has improved commuter movement during peak hours by allowing Aayalolo buses to travel against the normal traffic direction on selected routes. Minister Ayariga, speaking at the Government Accountability Series on Monday, October 5, 2026, mentioned that the encouraging results have prompted President Mahama to engage with key stakeholders on sustaining the initiative.

President Mahama is scheduled to meet stakeholders on Thursday, October 7, 2026, to review the pilot programme and decide on the future course of action. The contra-flow system, approved by the President, aims to facilitate faster and easier movement for thousands of city commuters during peak hours using the Bus Rapid Transport Company, popularly known as Aayalolo buses.

The Aayalolo contra-flow system was introduced on September 29 as a strategy to tackle Accra's traffic issues, particularly during rush hours. This arrangement allows Aayalolo buses to use designated lanes in the opposite direction of regular traffic flow during specified times, offering a quicker and more reliable public transport option.

The pilot programme is part of broader efforts to address Accra's urban mobility challenges, as increasing traffic volumes impact travel times for commuters. The upcoming stakeholder meeting will provide an opportunity for authorities and institutions to assess the pilot's performance and consider making it a permanent feature of the city's public transport system.
