Accra: President John Dramani Mahama has announced that the government is focused on building ten new stadia across the country to promote sporting activities. The initiative aims to ensure that newly created regions, as well as other existing regions without such facilities, will benefit from the development.
According to Ghana Web, President Mahama indicated that the stadia will be equipped with football pitches, athletics tracks, and special courts for volleyball and other sporting disciplines. During a trophy presentation at the presidency by Medeama SC and Nations FC on September 8, 2026, the president outlined the plans to the public.
He mentioned that regions including Oti, Western North, Ahafo, Bono East, Savannah, Northeast, Upper East, and Upper West are set to receive new stadiums. These facilities will cater to various sports such as football, volleyball, and basketball. President Mahama also revealed that plans are well underway, with Minister of Finance Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson initiating processes to release funds for the project.
Additionally, President Mahama addressed the condition of the Ho Sports Stadium, which is in a state of disrepair. He stated that the stadium will be refurbished and rebuilt into a new facility. The Minister of Finance has included the construction of the ten new stadiums in this year's budget to support the government's commitment to enhancing sports infrastructure in the country.
