Bolgatanga: President John Dramani Mahama has disclosed that he will soon initiate the construction of an airport in the Upper East Region following an inspection of the site by aviation authorities. The President invited the public to join him at the site for the sod-cutting ceremony, marking the beginning of the airport's construction.
According to Ghana Web, President Mahama stated that the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) has confirmed the site's suitability for the project. The planned airport is anticipated to improve regional connectivity, increase tourism, and stimulate economic growth in the area.
The President also mentioned that the project will be financed through a newly approved airport infrastructure development levy. He acknowledged the support from the Majority Leader and Members of Parliament, who have approved the levy, ensuring the funding for the airport's construction. This announcement was made during his address to the Upper East National House of Chiefs.
Regional Minister for Upper East, Donatus Atanga, expressed optimism regarding the project's commencement. He hopes for a swift completion and commissioning, signaling a new phase of development for the region.
