Accra: President John Dramani Mahama, the Commander-In-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, commissioned a fleet of vehicles for the Ghana Armed Forces. This marks a significant step in the Government's ongoing modernization efforts to retool the military services.
According to Ghana News Agency, the newly commissioned fleet includes pickup trucks, buses, and land cruisers, all aimed at enhancing the mobility and operational efficiency of the Ghana Armed Forces. The ceremony took place during the 2025 West African Soldiers' Social Activity (WASA) at the Headquarters of the Ghana Armed Forces in Burma Camp, Accra. WASA serves as an annual gathering for security force members to engage and appreciate one another.
President Mahama highlighted that this vehicle fleet is merely the first phase, with plans in place to acquire additional military resources, including armored personnel carriers, strategic drones, and advanced communication systems. These acquisitions will support the establishment of Ghana's first Cyber and Electronic Warfare Centre at the Tamale Air Force Base, which will focus on border surveillance and defense capabilities.
The President also announced plans to enhance the Ghana Navy and Air Force with offshore patrol vessels and new helicopters, alongside a new executive jet for official use. Additionally, two new military units will be established in the Oti and Central Regions to address emerging security challenges.
The ongoing recruitment drive aims to boost the Ghana Armed Forces' workforce by 12,000 personnel over four years, enhancing their operational capacity. President Mahama expressed condolences to families affected by a tragic stampede during a recent recruitment exercise and assured that a Board of Inquiry will investigate the incident to prevent future occurrences.
Regarding military personnel welfare, President Mahama emphasized the importance of their well-being and announced support initiatives like the Mutual Health Fund. This fund, backed by seed money from the National Security Secretariat and donations from supporters like Mr. Kofi Appiah, aims to enhance health care access and financial security for service personnel and their families.
President Mahama reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring the Ghana Armed Forces are well-resourced, trained, and equipped. He announced that two forward operating bases in the northern region are ready for commissioning, with plans to complete four more by year's end. These facilities will enhance national defense and rapid response capabilities.
