Accra: President John Dramani Mahama has proposed that every Ghanaian undergo basic health screening at least once a year under the newly launched Free Primary Healthcare initiative. The initiative aims to enhance preventive care and promote early detection of illnesses, complementing the existing National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
According to Ghana Web, the President emphasized the significance of regular health screenings as a fundamental component of the initiative during its launch on Wednesday, April 15, 2026. He highlighted the preventive aspect of the Free Primary Healthcare program, which seeks to identify and treat illnesses at an early stage, preventing them from progressing into more severe conditions.
President Mahama called upon traditional and religious leaders to aid in mobilizing communities to participate in the program's rollout. He stressed the necessity for every Ghanaian to be screened annually and receive basic health checks, underscoring the role of community leaders in facilitating this process.
The Free Primary Healthcare program is anticipated to mitigate the strain of advanced illnesses on hospitals and families by ensuring citizens have access to regular check-ups and timely medical interventions, according to the President.
