PFAG Criticizes Takyi Arhin’s Remarks on André Ayew

Sunyani:The Professional Footballers Association of Ghana (PFAG) has condemned remarks made by Aduana FC General Manager Takyi Arhin regarding former Black Stars captain André Ayew's potential ambition to become Ghana Football Association (GFA) president.

According to Ghana Web, Arhin suggested that Ayew would be better off investing in businesses in his hometown of Paga, such as goat farming, rather than pursuing a career in football administration. He made these comments on Space FM in Sunyani, arguing that success in football leadership requires strong relationships and administrative experience.

In a statement issued on October 12, the PFAG described Arhin's comments about Ayew, who is a member of the union, as 'unacceptable and disparaging'. The association emphasized the importance of differentiating between constructive criticism and personal ridicule in discussions about football administration.

The PFAG highlighted Ayew's significant contributions to Ghana football, noting his status as the country's second-most capped international player, a multiple FIFA World Cup participant, and the captain of the Black Satellites team that won the 2009 FIFA U-20 World Cup. The union also criticized the use of regional stereotypes in reference to Ayew's northern roots, asserting that these have no place in Ghana football.

The association stated that football leadership should prioritize ideas, competence, vision, and service over personal attacks. It urged the public to evaluate Ayew based on his ideas, experience, and contributions to the game, rather than his background. The PFAG's statement concluded by calling for unity in Ghana football, emphasizing the need to avoid division through disrespect and stereotyping.
